Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to discover that there are other views.
– William F. Buckley, Jr.
Microaggression is the current rage among academic researchers, college students, and the myriad grievance groups who eagerly invoke the term to discredit any speech or act they find offensive. Indeed, as currently defined, a microagression often comprises the most delicate butterfly wing beat, but nonetheless has a “pretty severe” effect on undergraduate students “at four different higher-ed institutions” (http://www.nationalreview.com/article/396306/harvard-study-suggests-microaggressions-might-make-people-die-sooner-katherine-timpf). But in-your-face virulent pro-terror, anti-U.S., anti-Israel, and anti-Jew groups on campus, such as CAIR and MSA, are perfectly acceptable on campus.
These are the same campuses at which students protest George Will and Condoleezza Rice as speakers as being too racist, too right wing.
Indeed, even a speaking invitation to a bona fide, card-carrying Liberal with long creds such as Bill Maher is rescinded, because students and faculty view him as “gross” and “racist” (as per Ben Affleck’s descriptions of Maher’s and Sam Harris’s views).
Even having human-rights activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali (a Muslim) (http://theahafoundation.org/) speak is a debatable matter, as her views in opposing female genital mutilation (FMG) and so-called “honor killings” and other Islamic anti-women violence may offend Muslims. In her view, violence is inherent to Islam. But protecting Muslims sensibilities on campus eclipses our nation’s First Amendment free speech rights.
In contrast, a convicted cop killer, Mumia Abu-Jamal, is welcome as speaker, because he “shows how this newest group of Goddard graduates expresses their freedom to engage and think radically and critically in a world that often sets up barriers to do just that” (http://www.foxnews.com/us/2014/10/01/despicable-decision-to-allow-abu-jamal-to-give-college-commencement-speech/). Despicable, indeed.
As well, Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Muslim Student Association (MSA), and their ilk – front organizations for Hamas and other terrorist organizations (http://www.meforum.org/916/cair-islamists-fooling-the-establishment and http://www.meforum.org/603/islamisms-campus-club-the-muslim-students) – are welcome on campus! Anti-Israel campaigns for boycotts, divestment, and sanctions (BDS, http://www.bdsmovement.net/) is also welcome on campus! Because cutting-off the sole democracy and free market power in the Middle East makes sense.
Certainly protesting Israel is far more urgent than challenging Muslim/ Islamic terror at home and around the world, protesting the conflicts in Syria, advocating for the containment and defeat of Boko Haram, preventing Iran from gaining functioning nukes, ISIS’s unchecked human rights travesties, a defunct Iraq, burgeoning Hezbollah/ ISIL conflict in Lebanon…yes, these are but small matters in the face of academic/ cultural exchange with Israel.
Whether the accusation entails “mircroaggressions” or “racism” or “checking privileged,” the message amounts to the same: STFU. Those who cast these accusations aim to discredit, to render those who disagree as irrelevant. When these terms are bandied, attempts to censors are usually at play.
Meanwhile, outside of a mosque in Jedda, beginning Jan. 9, 2015 Saudi blogger Raif Badawi is now bearing 50 lashes each of the next 20 Fridays until he reaches 1,000 lashes (Saudi blogger receives first 50 of 1,000 lashes – CNN Video). In addition Mr. Badawi was sentenced to 10 years in jail and a fine of 1,000,000 riyals (about $267,000) for “harming Islam.” His crime? Co-founding the Saudi Liberal Network online forum and writing a blog critical of Islam. Here’s a link to other free speech champions in the Muslim world and their persecution (http://www.memri.org/report/en/0/0/0/0/0/0/8373.htm#_edn20). This is what an absence of speech rights looks like. This is Sharia law.
For too long we have celebrated the erosion of our Western values, by calling it “multiculturalism.” Our politicians, intellectuals and academics seem to prefer indulging in “social romanticism” than questioning the exploding parallel legal and social norms that are emerging in immigrant Muslim communities.
Liberals – quick to avail of free speech and assembly rights – oppose Enlightenment values to uphold those of censors, murderers, and terrorists.
BTW – here’s a note of levity from Bill Maher: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipu0ifyC-Xc).
